RFID Based Smart Trolley

RFID based Smart Trolley Nowadays, shopping at malls has become a daily routine in major cities. People purchase various products and place them in their shopping trolleys. However, the process of going to the billing counter for payment can be time-consuming and frustrating. Our primary objective in designing this prototype is to reduce human effort, eliminate queues, and minimize the time spent during the billing process. The prototype incorporates components such as RFID tags for product identification, an RFID reader for scanning products placed in the trolley, and an LCD display to show the scanned items. The data from the trolley is then sent to the server at the billing counter. Keywords associated with this prototype include RFID Reader, LCD Touchscreen, Power backup, along with optional devices such as Printer, EDC Machine, weight scale.

Introduction: RFID based Smart Trolley, over the course of the century, numerous innovations and advancements in information technology have significantly influenced our perspectives and expectations. Shopping is an activity that consumes a significant amount of human time. According to surveys, people spend approximately 1 to 1.5 hours on shopping, and customers often prefer to leave a queue if it is too long. In modern supermarkets and malls, customers utilize shopping trolleys and baskets to store their purchased products. However, the checkout process at the billing counter can be time-consuming and often requires a large number of human resources. To address this issue, we have developed a smart trolley system based on RFID technology, aiming to minimize rush, save time, and reduce human effort. Our prototype offers enhanced features to overcome queue-related problems. The smart trolley system consists of an, RFID reader, LCD display, each product is attached with an RFID tag, and when a person places the product in the trolley, the RFID reader automatically scans it, displaying details such as the product name, cost, and quantity on the LCD display. Once the customer finishes shopping the billing can be completed at the trolley itself. This system has the potential to personalize and enhance the shopping experience, making it more enjoyable, convenient, and efficient for customers.

System Details: The Smart Cart system is based on RFID technology, offers an efficient solution for product scanning, bill generation, and payment Components such as RFID reader, LCD display, are utilized, along with RFID tags attached to the products. The RFID reader scans the tags on the products, and the information is sent to the touch display (Android/iOS tab) Customers can easily scan and remove products from the cart. Additionally, a weight machine is available to calculate product weight. Barcode reader is also present in case RFID tag is not available. The total bill amount is generated and displayed on the LCD screen and payment can be completed using various payment options on the LCD screen itself, it eliminates the need for customers to wait in queues at billing counters This smart shopping with the trolley application aims to automate and centralize the billing process in malls and supermarkets. The system offers benefits such as enhanced customer satisfaction without queues, bill calculation/Payment at the trolley itself, reduced chances of traffic and mismanagement, decreased support staff, cost efficiency, and the inclusion of a weight machine for product weight calculation.

The Existing Systems Generally Possess the Following Features:

  • Elimination of billing queues, resulting in improved customer satisfaction.
  • Bill calculation directly at the trolley itself.
  • Reduced likelihood of traffic and mismanagement.
  • Decreased reliance on support staff.
  • Cost efficiency.
  •  Integration of a weight machine to calculate the product weight.

Proposed System:
The RFID-based smart trolley system consists of a trolley equipped with an RFID reader. When a customer places a product into the trolley, the RFID reader detects the RFID tag number associated with the product for identification. Each RFID tag number is linked to a specific product description stored in a centralized server’s database. The product can be scanned directly by the reader, and if the customer wishes to remove any product, they can remove it via the touch based LCD screen. After the customer completes their product selection, the total bill amount is generated and displayed on the trolley’s LCD, the payment can be done directly at the LCD screen.

Step 1: Start
Step 2: Place the product with the attached RFID tag into the trolley.
Step 3: The RFID reader reads the tag information.
Step 4: The server stores the information in the database.
Step 5: The server calculates the total bill amount.
Step 6: The final amount is displayed on the server.
Step 7: The customer makes the payment for the bill.
Step 8: The database is updated accordingly.
Step 9: stop

The proposed system offers several benefits, including:

  • Reducing the time spent at the billing counter, leading to increased customer satisfaction.
  • Potentially reducing expenses for the management.
  • Providing users with real-time information about the total bill amount during their shopping, preventing overspending.
  • Improving overall efficiency in the shopping and billing process.
  • Enabling quick checkout and eliminating the need to wait in long queues.

Conclusion The use of RFID technology for automatic billing of products presents a highly viable option for the future. The RFID-based system is efficient, compact, and demonstrates promising performance. Compared to barcode reading, RFID offers advantages such as faster scanning and not requiring a line of sight. Implementing this technology will significantly enhance the overall shopping experience. The smart trolley system provides various parameters, including product name, product cost, and product weight, which are conveniently displayed to users.
